Conditions We Manage

Neck Pain

The neck is a network of bones, joints, muscles and nerves that are all controlled by the central nervous system (your brain and spinal cord). While strong and stable, there are certain injuries and disorders that can affect the health of the neck and cause pain and other issues. While the majority of neck pain cases will typically go away within a few days or even weeks, if the pain continues then it’s time to turn to our pain management doctors so that we can address the underlying issue and get you feeling better fast.

Common causes of neck pain include:

  • Traumatic injuries
  • Poor posture
  • Overuse
  • Muscle tension
  • Meningitis
  • Cervical disc degeneration
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
      • Fibromyalgia
      • Herniated or rupture disc
      • Spinal stenosis
      • Infection
      • Abscess
      • Tumor
      • Caner of the spine

So when should you see Dr. Williams about your neck pain? If your neck pain lasts over a week then it’s time to give us a call. One of the first things we will do is walk through your medical history and perform a physical exam. Be ready to share all the symptoms you are experiencing. The treatment plan we create will depend on the root cause of your neck pain. In addition to performing a physical exam there are some other diagnostic tests that may need to be performed in order to determine the cause of your neck pain, including:

  • X-rays
  • Blood tests
  • CT scans
      • MRI scans
      • Spinal Tap

Once we determine the cause we can create a treatment plan that will be sure to speed up the healing process and improve your neck health. Common treatment options include:

  • Icing or heat therapy
  • Physical therapy or stretching exercises
  • Prescription or over-the-counter pain medications
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Spinal manipulation and traction
  • Antibiotics (if the pain is caused by an infection)
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation
  • Steroid injections
  • Neck collar
  • Surgery (rare)

Don’t let neck pain become a royal pain in the neck. Turn to Dr. Williams for the solution you need to enjoy life pain-free.
