Understanding Pain

At some point in our lives, many of us have experienced pain to some degree. While we might understand what pain feels like, it may still be difficult to define. By understanding pain, you can take a stand against chronic pain.

Many of us have experienced pain in some degree throughout the course of our lives. We may understand what pain can feel like, but it can still be difficult to fully define. A good definition of pain is “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.”

While most definitions give the scientific description of pain, the emotional and physical effects can be difficult to describe, as they vary from person to person. The following sections are available to help you better understand pain so that you can seek proper treatment from Dr. Williams.

Types of Pain

Not all pain is created equal. There are three different types of pain that encompass different areas of the pain you might be feeling. Depending on the type of pain you are experiencing, Dr. Williams will be able to create an appropriate treatment plan.

Nerve Blocks

When your pain does not respond to conservative treatment options, your pain specialist can provide a second line of therapy. A nerve block can be performed to lessen the painful signals transmitted by nerves with relief ranging anywhere from a few hours to several months.

Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

Dr. Williams may recommend more complex treatment options, such as Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS). SCS is widely used by pain specialists and is FDA approved for treatment of trunk and limb pain.

Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is a safe and effective therapy that has been used for more than 40 years to help people take control of their chronic pain. SCS is the most commonly used implantable neurostimulation technology for management of pain syndromes—as many as 50,000 neurostimulators are implanted worldwide every year. SCS is a widely accepted FDA-approved medical treatment for chronic pain of the trunk and limbs (back, legs and arms).
